Web Development
One of the reasons we started this company is because we have a passion for helping people grow their business. But it’s not easy to find clients in our small, crowded marketplace – especially when budgets are tight and confidence remians low. Back in 2011, to sustain our business through the sluggish econimic recovery, we augmented our sales by offering another service; web development.
The primary difference between offering subcontract web development services and the other services we provide is that fact that we don’t work for the client. Instead we work for a company that requires additional web development resources to meet the needs of their clients.
Like most choices in life and in business, there are plusses and minuses to this arrangement. On the plus side, we’re able to reduce our cost of sales, project management, and customer service because our customer owns the client relationship. Negatives include a lower rate for web development, the ebb and flow of contract work, and our limited engagement excludes other members of our creative team.
Another challenge of working as a subcontractor is we typically don’t take credit for our work. More often than not, when serving behind the scenes, we’re contractually restricted from promoting the work we do. That means we can’t send out press releases and update our portfolio with work we do for other agencies.
Despite the challenges, subcontract web development has been essential to our growth representing up to 50% of our annual revenue. The key to that success is developing mutually beneficial partnerships.
Examples of ideal partners include traditional agencies that don’t have web development resources to serve their clients’ online marketing needs, digital agencies that occasionally need additional resources to support their clients, and IT service providers with clients that need web development.
We are currently seeking more subcontract web development work. If you have clients with web development needs, perhaps Milestone is the right partner for your business.
Until next week,
Matthew Anderson, President
Milestone Marketing Associates, Inc.
