The Dark Side

Posted by: on Sunday, February 2, 2014

The hard drive on my computer finally shit the bed on Saturday. It had been acting squirrely for a week or so I figured it was on its last legs. Fortunately I copy all of my business and personal files to an external hard drive every week, and my most recent backup was only a couple days old.

For several years now I’ve been contemplating a switch from PC to Mac. In fact I would be switching back to Apple, because I did own a PowerMac 20 years ago.  After graduating from UF with my advertising degree, I aspired to become a graphic designer so my parents bought the computer for my graduation present.

As it turned out, I was hired as a marketing manager in training for my first career job, and I distinctly remember manually pasting-up a catalog layout during my first week on the job. So much for my fancy Mac and my bootleg student version of PageMaker…I ended up becoming a proficient PC user and poked fun at our graphic designers who always worked on Macs. We called them “Mactards” for their cult-like commitment to Apple.

However, since we started Milestone the subject of becoming a “Mac-shop” has come up every year. While the high cost of Apple products has always been the primary concern, I’ve also been reluctant to learn a new operating system after so many years working with Microsoft applications.

I’ve pretty much decided to buy a MacBook Pro. I’m hoping the experience will be comparable to my switch to iPhone when I was thoroughly impressed by the superior user interface. I’ve also enjoyed owning my iPad, so I guess the MacBook will be the final step.

But for some reason this quote keeps running through my head…

“Strike me down with all of your hatred and your journey towards the dark side will be complete!”

Emperor Palpatine
Star Wars: Episode VI
Return of the Jedi

Microsoft is the evil empire, right? Which means Apple is the rebel alliance. And of course I must be Luke Skywalker. So everything should be fine…

Until next week,

In a world where Vampires are the good guys I suggest there are no more bad guys/evil empires. Just Bady guys, really bad guys and ZOMG run for your life.

Remember too that hard drives on MAC's will fail also, so keep those backups going. Live long and prosper........

Or you could be Luke's friend Biggs, who died attacking the Death Star. Also, under your analogy, wouldn't Apple be the Evil Empire?

There are goods and bads to using a Mac. The good is that everything works and you rarely have to start your hard drive from scratch (unless you want to). Two bads would be: 1) Media consumes a lot of space; be sure to unselect the copying options in iTunes and iPhoto, and 2) It will take some time to adjust to Mac's way of navigating folders after coming from Windows. Beyond that, you will have fun using it.
