Green Rush
Several of our existing clients are keeping an eye on the Green Rush, and we have one new client who is determined to carve out a niche in the marijuana industry. Already worth more than a billion dollars, the market for legal pot is estimated to grow into the tens-of-billions over the next few years.
Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states, and legislation is pending in 13 more, including Florida. Now that recreational marijuana use is allowed in Colorado and Washington, it appears the prohibition tide is turning towards sensible regulation of the ubiquitous weed.
When we conduct a situation analysis for a client as part of their strategic marketing planning, we use the SWOT analysis method to consider their internal environment (Strengths and Weaknesses) and their external environment (Opportunities and Threats). Government regulation is often cited in one or both external categories.
Whether or not you’re a fan of politics, as a business owner you have to appreciate the power of government to create or kill a market. And it doesn’t matter if your motivation is personal or professional, it is in your best interest to understand political issues, consider politicians accordingly, and vote every chance you get.
Figure out what’s important to you and/or your business. Maybe you’re passionate about the local noise ordinance. Perhaps the national health care system can make or break your company. Possibly you’re excited about geopolitical border disputes.
Whatever you do, don’t forget to vote on March 25 and November 4. I will vote to extend the 1-mil property tax to support Sarasota County schools, and I plan to support the legalization of medical marijuana in Florida. What will you do?
