RPS Recap
Well, my daughter is no longer the reigning champion of the Siesta Key Kiwanis Kiwanis Club’s Annual Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament, but the Andersons we’re still triumphant. My nephew was the overall winner, and yours truly won the second round featuring a similar game called Bear, Hunter, Princess.
Two-time tournament champion, Catherine Anderson, was knocked out in the first round (I was too), but my younger daughter, Mia Anderson, made it all the way to the semifinals. She was crushed when she lost, bursting into tears. This was her first taste of losing at the tender age of seven.
My nephew, Sky Anderson, on the other hand went ALL-THE-WAY, keeping the Anderson name in lights for another year. And I was the big winner of the game described as “the Canadian version” of Rock, Paper, Scissors called Bear, Hunter, Princess.
A quick Google search revealed no Canadian sources for this game, but I can attest to its uproarious nature. Two players begin standing back-to-back, and on the count of three, they each turn at the same time and reveal their pose.
Display the Bear by holding your hands like claws over your head. Sound effects are encouraged, in this case, a mighty roar.
Mimic aiming a rifle to represent the Hunter. Throw in a “BANG, BANG” if you like.
And the Princess is posed by placing one hand behind your head and the other on your hip. I suppose a scream or a sigh will do so long as you can stop laughing.
As for the rules, the Bear eats the Princess, the Hunter shoots the Bear, and the Princess beats the Hunter.
There seemed to be some discrepancy as to how the Princess beats the Hunter. For the purposes of our kid-friendly event it was simply explained that the woman always beats the man. However, upon researching this game online I found another explanation where the Princess beats the Hunter because he has pity on her and then she stabs him in the back.
As you might imagine, both the players and the spectators found great amusement in this new game. So much so I’m sure it will come around again next year.
Speaking of Rock, Paper, Scissors, I’d like to bring your attention to an interesting AdFed Suncoast event coming up this week:
