Red, White and Blue

Posted by: on Saturday, July 12, 2014

A few weeks ago we shared a referral story about a new client, Open Door Baltimore, and their engagement with Milestone to build a new website for their nonprofit organization. One of the reasons why they opted for a more professional web presence is because the board of directors would like to expand their unique approach to community development nationwide.

The original plan was to start small with an entry-level website. Then depending on how satisfied they were with our work and the progress of their expansion plans, they might hire Milestone to help rebrand the organization as Open Door America.

By the end of our website project kickoff meeting it was clear that Bill Simpson, the organization’s CEO, wanted to accelerate the rebranding process. With the board’s approval we started working on a new logo for Open Door America, and in the spirit of Independence Day I thought you might enjoy seeing the red, white and blue results of round one.

We decided to focus on the icon for the first round because we think an image of an open door should play an integral role in their identity. It has the potential to reinforce the organization’s mission of opening doors for people, and it can evoke a powerful image that connects with their two primary audiences: donors of time, talent and treasure, and recipients of the services they provide.

You will notice each open door icon design is paired with a consistent, modern typesetting of the organization’s new name. We hope one or more of the icons presented in round one will resonate with the client at which point we will zero in on the likely winner and further refine the logo design by exploring other color and font combinations.

Bill was in Baltimore last week for a board meeting so we’re looking forward to their feedback this week. Of course the client’s opinion is the most important, but we’d love to read your comments too. Please let us know what you like, or don’t like, about our first round of logo designs for Open Door America.

Until next week,

Matthew Anderson, President
Milestone Marketing Associates, Inc.

I like the first one also. Question- shouldn't the door be in the upper right corner if is going to mirror the US Flag?

First one is the most engaging and inviting.

Another great Monday morning blog article.

I really like the first logo. It is a very creative way of incorporating the company name and American flag. I especially like the subtle touch of a star as the door knob. I like the simplicity of Design 2 and it would layout horizontally as well (like Design 3).

If I must provide suggestions, I would say make the "OPEN DOOR" blue in Design 1 and 2. Also, try making the door frame of Design 5 blue instead of black.

Nice work, Milestone.
