Mobilegeddon

Posted by: on Sunday, May 3, 2015

Last week Google rolled out a search algorithm designed to favor mobile-friendly websites. Those of us in the technology-world of website design and search engines are referring to it as Mobilegeddon. If you have a website that was not designed for mobile devices – or “responsive” so your website content automatically scales to fit your website visitors screen size – then this is your wakeup call.

If you’re not sure if your website is mobile-friendly, you can test your website here. If you know your website is not mobile-friendly (or you just checked), then your website has a distinct disadvantage. If you have a website that is not mobile-friendly, and your competitor has a website that is, then as of last week their website is going to outrank your website on Google searches.

And depending on how important website traffic that comes from Google searches is to your business; this new algorithm could significantly impact on your business.

Over the last several years we’ve written many blog posts about the importance of mobile-friendly websites. The driving force is not a secret. Mobile devices (smart phones and tablet computers) have fundamentally changed the way people access the Internet. And late last year the mobile trend surpassed desktop web browsing.

Google’s latest algorithm is simply doing what Google does best. And that is deliver the best search results they can to the people who use their service. And since most people are searching Google from a mobile device, it’s only natural to favor mobile-friendly websites so those people get search results that they can easily access with the device their using.
